about

This song was created in its original form the day after #45 was elected. My dear talented friend, Jennifer Condos, repurposed the lyrics to a simpler and plaintive melody that I fell in love with. To me it seems to have a native American quality. Some of the lyrics were adapted from prayer by St. Francis.

lyrics

Subways are silent
Somber hombres numb
Reciting verses on the corner
by the light of what we’ve done

We are held in stillness.
Sacred chants unfold
Dark history has repeated
Tales of greed and go

Tonight, We see what we have we done
That’s why we sing and beat the drum
The drum of love
The drum of hope
The drum of peace In our time
From the valleys below
To the mountain sky

We sing into the silence
Listen for the words
Find goodness from the planting
We lay deep into the earth

hold me now, I am shaken
Take my hand, you know the way
through these weeds of tangled excess
and the promise of a better day

May I become an instrument of peace
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
Where there is despair bring hope
And where there is darkness... light.
